Crawlspace radon mitigation systems are the most labor intensive systems. They’re also some of the most effective. Be prepared to get dirty. Use a smoke bottle to ensure your system is leak-free. Even small leaks can add up to thousands of dollars in increased HVAC bills over the life of your radon fan. A well-designed system should suction down like a vacuum sealed steak before it hits the deep freeze. VALUE ALERT: radon mitigators have a hard time getting paid for these systems. If you read my blog posts below, you’ll find that “vapor encapsulation” systems often cost 10X what a crawlspace radon mitigation system costs on the open market. These two systems are often remarkably similar with the radon system being the only one to eliminate vapor, not just seal it out. Due to a confluence of factors, radon mitigators just can’t seem to get paid the same way. Consumers get a great deal for the hardest radon job.
Vapor encapsulation and radon crawlspace mitigation are two closely related contractor skills. At PDS, we carry ASTM E1745 CLASS C vapor barriers certified for use in ANSI/AARST certified jurisdictions. We carry thicknesses in 3 mil, 6 mil, 6.5 mil, 10 mil, 20 mil and other thicknesses by request. We’ve tested over two dozen different barrier and sealant combinations to come up with the best line up in the industry. We recommend ISI’s VIPER line with the SM or Nova adhesives for the highest quality. Overlap seams by 12”, add a caulk line, and cover with our 4” white barrier tape for the best look. Use terminal bars or viper pins on the walls for the best adhesion, highest quality, and best aesthetics. Be sure to use a perforated pipe or radon mat under the barrier for a good pressure field.
